Our department offers a variety of scholarships available to both undergraduate and graduate students, designed to support and encourage your experience at Iowa State. Our undergraduate scholarships are categorized into several different areas: department-wide, climate sciencegeology and earth science, meteorology, geology field camp. These scholarships are available to any major in the department except when noted and can be easily accessed and applied for through OneApp.

Undergraduate

Department-wide scholarships

David and Julianne Svingen Scholarship
Established by David M. Svingen and Julianne Peitz Svingen to support students in the Department of the Earth, Atmosphere, and Climate studying for careers in the environment and sustainability.

James V. Aanstoos and Sarah A. Rajala Endowed Scholarship
Established by Jim Aanstoos and Sarah Rajala to support students to participate in a study abroad program, with preference given to students enrolled in the Department of the Earth, Atmosphere, and Climate.

Dr. Willard Lynn Watney Scholarship
Established by Karen L. Watney on behalf of Dr. Willard Watney to support students in the Department of Earth, Atmosphere, and Climate participating in cross-disciplinary research and/or pursuing a second major.

Climate Science scholarships

Graether Family Climate Science Scholarship
This award is made from the Graether Family Fund for Climate Science Advancement, a fund established by Dr. John Graether to support climate science education.

Geology and Earth Science scholarships

Morehouse Scholarship
Established by the estate of David M. Morehouse to provide fellowships and scholarships to promising students of geology. Students with a GPA >2.5 and primary declared major in geology or Earth science receive this scholarship, which ranges between $1500 – $2000 per year.

Rodney D. Gardner Scholarship
Established in 1995 by the children of Rodney D. Gardner (B.S. 1962) to furnish a scholarship to an undergraduate geology student on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

Meteorology scholarships

Michael Oetken Memorial Scholarship
Established by Diane Van Duzen in honor of her father Michael Oetken who had a life-long interest in meteorology. Requires a minimum 3.0 GPA, and junior or senior class standing. Each spring, $1000 is awarded.

William and Ransome Nelson Scholarship
William L. Nelson established this fund to support future meteorologists.  This fund serves as a tribute to his father’s memory and a contribution to advancing weather forecasting and monitoring of extreme weather events.

Geology Field Camp scholarships

* = These scholarships are not available through OneApp. Students who enroll for Geology 302 Summer Field Course are automatically considered.

Morehouse Field Camp Scholarship*
This $1000 scholarship is given from the fund established by the estate of David M. Morehouse to all students enrolled in Geology 302 Summer Field Studies, including non-degree seeking students.

Beck Family Scholarship Fund*
Established by Jim and Denise Beck to help the department recruit the best undergraduate geology students, with particular emphasis on providing assistance for students to attend field camp.

Kevin Connolly Geology Field Camp Scholarship*
Established by Kevin Connolly (B.A. 1987) in 2008 to provide Geology or Earth Science majors with a scholarship to attend the Carl Vondra Field Camp.

Carolyn Jones Eiler Scholarship*
Established in the memory of Carolyn Eiler-Jones (B.S. 1973) by her family, this fund provides a scholarship for an undergraduate geology student to attend the summer field camp.

Huedepohl Geology Field Camp Scholarship*
Established in 2004 by Bradley Huedepohl (M.S., 1956) to provide a scholarship for an undergraduate geology student to attend the ISU summer field camp.

Peter R. Johnson Memorial Scholarship*
Established in the memory of Peter R. Johnson (B.S. 1977) by his family, this fund provides a scholarship for an undergraduate geology student to attend the summer field camp.

Kozimko Geology Field Camp Scholarship
Established by Mary Ann and Mike Kozimko (MS 1977) in 2018 to support students attending the Carl Vondra Geology Field Camp on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

Jon Martin Peckenpaugh Memorial Scholarship*
Established in the memory of Jon M. Peckenpaugh (B.S. 1970; M.S. 1973) by his family, to provide a scholarship for an undergraduate geology, environmental science, or Earth science major or a geology graduate student to attend the Carl Vondra Field Camp.

Graduate scholarships and fellowships

Bruce Bowen Graduate Fellowship
This award was established by Bruce Bowen to support graduate students enrolled in the geology or earth science programs.

Georgia L and Carl F Vondra Graduate Fellowship
Established by Distinguished Professor Emeritus Carl Vondra and his wife Georgia to attract outstanding graduate students to the Masters of Ph.D. programs in Geological Sciences.

John Lemish Memorial Scholarship
Established to provide support to graduate students pursuing a graduate degree in the Department of the Earth, Atmosphere, and Climate.

Morehouse Graduate Travel Scholarship
Given from the fund established by the estate of David M. Morehouse, all graduate students majoring in geology or earth science receive $1500 per year to support professional travel.
