As an earth science education and studies student, you will be prepared for a career in secondary science education by combining a strong foundation in Earth systems science with teacher preparation through a secondary major in education. This major was recently redesigned in partnership with Iowa State’s School of Education; the curriculum aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and provides a streamlined pathway to earn high school Earth science teacher credentials.
When paired with another major, minor, or certificate, the BA in Earth Science Education and Studies allows you to build a curriculum that prepares you for a career in science communication, natural resource management, or other complementary pursuits.
Through hands-on laboratory experiences, fieldwork, data analysis, and collaborative projects, you will build essential career-ready skills in teamwork, critical thinking, leadership, communication, and technology. Along with expertise in geology and environmental systems, the flexible curriculum provides opportunities for you to develop skills in geospatial technologies, science communication, and other areas of interest. You will gain experience with industry-relevant tools such as drone mapping and field data collection techniques while learning to solve real-world challenges related to energy, water resources, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development.
